The safe way to share payment card data

Why Share Payment Card Data?

There are many reasons why a business may need to share cardholder data (CHD) with business partners or vendors. Maybe a concierge needs to release their guest's card number to the caterer or florist that has been hired for their event. Or perhaps the front desk clerk is helping the guest make a reservation at another property. Either way, clear-text CHD would need to be accessed, and 4Word allows merchants to do that without compromising their security.

Sharing Without Seeing

Merchants put considerable time and effort into limiting the size and scope of their card data environments. They use our DOLLARS ON THE NET® payment gateway with security technologies like TrueTokenization®, 4Go®, and True P2PE® (point-to-point encryption) to keep card data from ever entering their network. After all, the smaller their card data environment, the easier it is to secure and the less fuss is involved in their annual PCI assessments.

Shift4 helps merchants keep as much card data as possible out of their environment, but what happens when the merchant needs to share card data like in one of the examples given above? How do you share a card number when all you have is a token? It used to be that the only solution was to have Shift4 reverse the token and provide the merchant with a clear-text card number. This once again introduced sensitive cardholder data into the merchant's system, which immediately put them back in scope for PCI – and made them much less secure.

Thankfully, 4Word now allows these merchants to share that sensitive card data with another trusted merchant while still keeping their own environment free from sensitive data. 4Word keeps their systems out of PCI scope while still meeting their business' needs.

Two Ways to Play

4Word supports two methods of data exchange. The first (and most secure) method allows two merchants who use DOLLARS ON THE NET to securely exchange sensitive payment card information without ever exposing the actual CHD. The second method permits a merchant who does not have DOLLARS ON THE NET (but has been granted access to 4Word by a merchant who does) to obtain access to the data for a single payment card.

Security Without Borders

In addition to sending CHD to the florist around the corner, 4Word can be used by international organizations to safely transfer payment information from Shift4 merchant customers within North America to properties around the globe. So long as the recipients have an Internet connection to access the 4Word site, they can redeem their four words for CHD in order to process any necessary transactions.
