When Your System Goes Offline
For our merchant customers who have the Universal Transaction Gateway® (UTG®) installed with DOLLARS ON THE NET®, we can offer help in processing transactions quickly when your connection to the Internet is lost, and keep your lines moving when things get busy. Shift4’s Secure Offline Stand-In™ (SOS) offers UTG users faster and safer offline processing of transactions.
How It Works
In a standard transaction, your POS uses the Internet to receive an authorization for the charge. But sometimes your Internet connection is down and you still need to complete the transaction and get the customer on their way. If you don’t have offline mode enabled, your system will prompt the cashier to call for a voice authorization. This is a time-consuming process, and when you’re busy with the increased holiday traffic, calling in can be a real pain.
But with our SOS, you can keep the lines moving. When your POS switches to offline mode, SOS can offer automatic, “artificial” auths for all transactions under a set threshold amount. You can determine the maximum dollar amount you will allow for automatic auths from SOS when you configure the settings. Your cashiers won’t be prompted to call for an auth for transactions under that amount and your customers and front-line staff won’t have any idea that your POS is running offline at that moment.
What You Need To Do
First, you need to be running the UTG. If you are, make sure you have offline mode enabled in your settings. Next, establish the threshold amount for the system to provide automatic auths during offline mode.
