Shift4 Sponsors Centennial High School’s Science Olympiad Program
Shift4 is proud to sponsor the Science Olympiad program at Centennial High School in Las Vegas, NV, for another year. This program serves as a valuable resource for tech-savvy high school students who want to pursue careers in science and technology fields.
Science Olympiad is one of Centennial High School’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs. Each year, students learn and study in preparation for the annual Science Olympiad State Championship. Students build projects individually, collaborate with their peers to solve difficult problems, and demonstrate that they are able to integrate scientific concepts into real-world applications. The knowledge and skills gained through this program can give students a head start on their path to a career in a STEM-related field.
-Alyson Darby, Science Olympiad Instructor
The events in Science Olympiad competitions include a wide range of academic subjects, including bridge building, astronomy, cell biology, anatomy, chemistry, and fossil research. Nearly every event requires students to work together as a team to successfully solve problems. The events are designed to test the students’ scientific knowledge, technical abilities, and critical thinking skills.
One of the events is called “Write It, Do It” and requires a team of two students. In this event, the first team member observes a small structure that was built beforehand using a variety of pieces, and writes instructions detailing how it was built. The object is then disassembled and the pieces are left with the student’s written directions. The second team member must recreate the structure using their teammate’s instructions.
Centennial High School came in first place at the Science Olympiad Nevada State Championships in 2012 and 2014, and they have also competed in the National Championships.
-Nevada Science Olympiad
Shift4 is sponsoring the Centennial High School team in the upcoming Science Olympiad State Championships on March 5, 2016, in Reno, NV. They will be competing against high schools from across Nevada. We wish them the best of luck!
