Don’t Let Old Terminals Leave You Open to Fraud
Our merchant customers know we are proud merchant advocates. In that spirit, here’s a quick loss prevention tip about switching out old terminals that will prevent the possibility of fraudulent charges and the potential exposure of your sensitive merchant account information. This is especially pertinent if you’ve recently switched to Shift4 or are upgrading or replacing your terminals.Did you know that your discarded terminals can still be used for fraud if found and still active? Also, old terminals may contain your merchant setup data and therefore your sensitive merchant account information could still be accessed on them. Just throwing away or donating your old terminals would be like throwing out your checkbook with checks still in it and then just hoping no one uses them.
We don’t want you unknowingly exposing your business to credit card fraud. So what do you need to do? Make sure your old terminals are properly deactivated by the processor and that all merchant setup data is removed. Verify with your merchant service provider that every old terminal gets deactivated. Also, never let your merchant service provider remove any terminals without removing all of your merchant setup data first.
